Chip and Joanna Gaines, the couple behind HGTV’s most popular show, Fixer Upper, are in the middle of a media firestorm regarding their church’s stance on the LGBT community.
Last week, a BuzzFeed article was published with the headline “Chip And Joanna Gaines’ Church Is Firmly Against Same-Sex Marriage.” The reality stars attend the Antioch Community Church, which is led by Pastor Jimmy Seibert. Seibert preaches to his congregation that being LGBT is purely a choice and a sin in the eyes of God.
Seibert has gone so far as to say he has worked with couples to “successfully” reverse their sexual feelings. He also calls the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize gay marriage a “biblical abomination.”
So, does belonging to an anti-gay church make Chip and Joanna Gaines anti-gay? Well, we can only make guesses at this point because the couple has not come out with an official statement on this issue.
Chip has, however, sent out this recent tweet:
“In times of trouble.. you’ll find the gaines family at church.”
HGTV has at least issued a statement to make the company’s stance clear. Their spokesperson said: “we don’t discriminate against members of the LGBT community in any of our shows. HGTV is proud to have a crystal clear, consistent record of including people from all walks of life in its series.” This is indeed true, as HGTV has shown many LGBT families in their various broadcasts. However, it is yet to be seen as to whether or not an LGBT couple will make it on Fixer Upper.
