The rumors have been swirling for quite some time, but J.J. Abrams has now made it official that gay characters and plotlines will be featured in future films from the Star Wars franchise.
The recent, The Force Awakens, was by far the most inclusive film toward minorities by featuring a black actor as the lead (Finn) and a female Jedi (Rey). The good news, though, is that the progressiveness of this film will only be farther reaching in future films.
When director J.J. Abrams was asked if he sees a character coming to life in a future movie, he said “Of course! When I talk about inclusivity it’s not excluding gay characters. It’s about inclusivity. So of course.”
He added: “I would love it. To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”
Last month, he also told the Daily Beast that his production company, Bad Robot, is making inclusivity a priority.
“I think we all have a hell of a lot to do, and I think it is insane to me that we still have to have a conversation about inclusivity. It’s shameful. We all need to do better to represent this world. It’s something that is important to me, and is something that we’re focusing on at Bad Robot.”
So, when he talks about gay Star Wars characters, do you think he is talking about a true budding romance between Finn and Poe?
