Recently, we discussed how Lionsgate were toying with the idea of prequel movies to the successful Hunger Games franchise.
This idea is hardly shocking, given that most production companies are pretty unwilling to bury a successful franchise. But it has just surfaced that if it were to happen, then Jennifer Lawrence would not be starring in them.
When speaking to Variety during the premiere of her new film, Joy, Jennifer had this to say: “I wouldn’t be involved. I think it’s too soon. They’ve got to let the body get cold, in my opinion.”
While Jennifer’s opinion is definitely valuable, her not being involved probably wouldn’t stop Lionsgate from producing prequels. The Hunter Games franchise has grossed over $1.3 billion at the box office so far, so the draw of producing more would undoubtedly be strong.
So, how would any prequels work? To be honest, if you cannot get Jennifer Lawrence involved, the best way would be to all the way back to the start of The Hunger Games. Perhaps show the very first, or maybe the second or third Hunger Games.
You could even do an origin story of how the Hunger Games actually began and the creation of the Capitol and the Districts.
That would make for some interesting viewing, and would also be a good excuse to bring back the arenas which have been missing from both parts of The Mockingjay.
