Johansson to Play Transgender Role

Dante "Tex" Gill to be played by Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson faces criticism this week as news of her casting in the role of a transgender man is released. She is set to play Dante “Tex” Gill in a crime based drama, “Rub & Tug.” The role of Tex is a trans man who police said operated a string of Pittsburgh massage parlors in the 1970s and 1980s that served as fronts for brothels. “Rub & Tug” is set to be directed by Rupert Sanders, who also directed the 2017 adaptation of the Japanese manga franchise “Ghost in the Shell.” Scarlett Johansson was under scrutiny for her role in that film as well, because it drew accusations of “whitewashing.” Transgender actress, Trace Lysette, was one of the many to speak up about the upset of Johansson’s casting as Tex. She wrote on her Twitter, “Not only do you play us and steal our narrative and our opportunity but you pat yourselves on the back with trophies and accolades for mimicking what we have lived.”
