La’Porscha Renae, the fan favorite and runner up on American Idol, recently got herself in hot water when talking about the LGBT community.
In an interview, Renae said:
“I am one of the people who don’t really agree with that lifestyle. I wasn’t brought up that way. It wasn’t how I was raised.” She then stepped back, saying, “But I do have a lot of friends and a lot of people that I love dearly who are gay and homosexual and they’re such sweet, nice people. We should just respect each other’s differences and opinions and move on.”
While Ranae may have had good intentions as she voiced the importance of respect and tolerance, her suggestion that gender identity and sexual orientation are lifestyle choices offended much of the community.
Ranae came out later on with an apology, but some feel it is lacking in conviction. You be the judge.
“I tried to be as open and honest and neutral as possible, but that’s the way interviews go,” Renae states. “Sometimes when you do interviews, it gets twisted up. I can understand when I read it back why people were offended, and for that, I deeply apologize. I wasn’t trying to offend anyone. I was just trying to honestly answer a question that caught me off guard. It was supposed to be an interview about singing, and it became political and I’m not a political person at all.”
She also tweeted the following:
What do you all think? It’s also interesting to note that Ranae is from Mississippi. Although she says she is not familiar with the anti-LGBT laws that are fiercely debated in her state, she does not condone discrimination.
