In case you haven’t heard of it, The Trans List is an upcoming HBO documentary that explores the experiences of transgender Americans.
Both Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox, arguably two of the biggest names in the transgender community, have appeared in the very first look at The Trans List documentary. The documentary is seeking to highlight the experiences of a diverse group of trans individuals, who tell their stories in their own words.
Jenner asks in the clip, which you can find below: “What is this thing, ‘female?’ It’s more than just hair and makeup.”
Another trans woman also chimes in, saying: “A light goes off and you just feel, finally I know what I need to do to feel complete and be happy.”
While the comments made in the clip are little more than snippets, it still gives a feeling of what to expect from the upcoming HBO documentary. In a year when the rights of transgender people have been pulled into the limelight both in the US and across the world, hearing the voices and stories of trans people is more important than ever.
Laverne herself closes off the clip: “We live in a world that tells so many people that they’re not enough. I’m here to tell you that you are.”
Described as a “riveting group portrait”, the synopsis for The Trans List reads: “Their stories extend beyond surface explanations of identity to deeper realities of politics and pleasure, telling captivating tales of love, desire, family, prejudice, and rebellion. From Cossey’s difficult days as an outed ‘James Bond Girl’ to Griffin-Gracy’s striking memories of the Stonewall Riots.”
Alongside Jenner and Laverne, we also have Janet Mock (who also produced the film and conducted the interviews contained within), Kylar Broadus, Caroline Cossey, Buck Angel, Nicole Maines, Amos Mac, Bamby Salcedo, Shane Ortega, Alok Vaid-Menon, and Miss Major Griffin-Gracy.
The Trans List premieres Dec. 5 at 8 p.m. ET on HBO.
