It’s hardly a secret that these days, a franchise is never truly dead when it’s successful. With countless reboots, spin-offs and prequels, companies will find ways to keep properties alive.
The supposed final installment of The Hunger Games, Mockingjay Part 2, just released and is still riding high at the top of the US charts after three weeks. So it should hardly come as a shocker that Lionsgate are considering doing prequels to the hugely successful trilogy.
It’s important to remember that nothing has been decided yet, but when vice chairman Michael burns spoke at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference is exploring development of prequels set before the rise of Jennifer Lawrence’s character Katniss Everdeen.
Apparently according to the vice chairman, younger fans missed the actual Hunger Games elements in the Mockingjay installments. He said: “…If we went backwards, there obviously would be arenas.”
That could be rather interesting, especially considering we would all have that knowledge of what the future holds for the Capitol and the Hunger Games. If Lionsgate do go down the route, I hope they include Suzanne Collins to some degree, as she would obviously have intimate knowledge of the lore of her world and what happened to create the situation we saw in The Hunger Games trilogy.
Hopefully we will get word soon on whether or not this is happening.
