Malta votes for gay marriage

Malta has become the latest European country to legalise same-sex marriage.

The Maltese parliament voted almost unanimously, by 66 – 1, in favour of same-sex marriage on Wednesday 12 July.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said this was an historic vote and added: “It shows that our democracy and our society is maturing, has reached an unprecedented level of maturity and it is a society where we can all say we are equal.”

One Nationalist MP, Edwin Vassallo, voted against the bill, saying that it went against his Christian beliefs, and that the legislation was “immoral”
