Man Sentenced in Murder of Gay Activitst

A man in Virginia is being sentenced to 15 years in prison for the murder of gay activist Bruce Garnett. Garnett played a huge role in lobbying the Virginia General Assembly in Richmond for LGBT rights. He was the first registered lobbyist for gay rights before the General Assembly. On December 14th, in the Chesterfield Circuit Court near Richmond, James M. Wheeler, 56, was sentenced to 40 years in a state penitentiary then suspended 25 years, requiring that 15 be served, and an indefinite amount of probation upon release. He plead guilty to the murder of his “friend” Bruce Garnett, 67, who was found stabbed in their shared apartment in April of 2017.
