Was L Fest not to your liking for something to do this weekend? The Mandela Weekend, held at the Southbank Centre in London might be more to your liking.
The Southbank Centre website describes this event as a way to “celebrate and explore the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. Enjoy free music, talks, film, performances and debates, showcasing new creative talent and ground-breaking debate about South Africa today.”
Essentially, it is a programme of free talks, screenings and performances as well as looks at the history of South Africa and Mandela’s impact on the political and cultural landscape.
There is a huge variety of talks, including a talk on sex & politics (a talk on the struggle for LGBT rights in South Africa), over the rainbow (a look at Mandela and LGBTQ+ rights), human rights struggles and way more. For a full look at the programme, click here.
It is a full weekend, with all sorts of things on offer from the 18th-19th July with a huge variety of film screenings and all sorts of talks, with lots to learn as well as celebrating the life of an amazing man. As I mentioned, the event is completely free. For more information – click here.
