It’s fairly common knowledge that Disney is systematically turning some of it’s post popular animated films into live action movies, but it seems even their live action films are up for a refresh, as the classic Mary Poppins is getting a sequel.
This has been reported by Variety, who are saying that Rob Marshall is set to direct. Marshall is probably best known for Into The Woods, Pirates of the Caribbean: Stranger Tides and Chicago.
He will be joined by some of his colleagues from Into The Woods, John DeLuca and Marc Platt, who will be serving as producers for the sequel.
All we know about the setting so far, is that Mary Poppins 2 will be set 20 years after the original film, and will be taking the storylines from P.L Travers’ children’s books focusing on Mary’s further adventures with the Banks family.
Rob Marshall is probably exactly the right choice for this venture, as he has had success before with taking a Broadway hit and turning it into a huge hit. His previous effort, Chicago, has made $306, 776, 732 worldwide so far.
I think the main question on people’s minds, though, is who on earth can possibly step into the shoes of Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews? Julie Andrews won best actress for her role as Mary Poppins, and Dick Van Dyke is also iconic in his role, too. Finding the right people for their roles is going to be key, and I just can’t think of anyone who could possibly fill those shoes.
