Matthew Shepard’s parents have spoken against Trumps anti-trans plans just days before they were finally able to lay their son to rest at Washington National Cathedral. The New York Times reported that the Trump administration wants to undo what the Obama administration did by recognizing an individuals gender identity in schools, prisons, and homeless shelters. Judy and Dennis Shepard told The Washington Blade that their son “Was always an activist against inequality and discrimination.” They continued to explain that Matthew would have opposed Trumps newest anti-LGBT policies, saying “He would have found it ridiculous.” The Shepard’s advocate in memory of their son for the LGBT community through their work with the Matthew Shepard Foundation. They began the foundation twenty years ago, after their son was brutally attacked and killed for being gay. Dennis Shepard also said during the interview at The Blade, “It’s going to take a long time to get back to where we should be” on LGBT rights.
