Microsoft First Company to Engage with Zero for Zeros Campaign

Microsoft is the first of 49 large corporations to work with Zero for Zeros, a campaign with the goal of persuading LGBT-friendly companies to stop supporting Anti-LGBT politicians. Zero for Zeros identified 29 lawmakers who are the “worst of the worst,” receiving a “zero” rating from the HRC Congressional Scorecard assessment of those protecting LGBT rights, including Sens. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, U.S. Reps Andy Harris and Steve King. Large corporations contribute millions of dollars through their Political Action Committees (PACs) to support legislation that is in line with the company’s views. However, as Zero for Zeros has noted, some of these contributions are not directed at politicians whose interests do align with the corporations. Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for U.S. Government Affairs released a memo last week which stated that the company has temporarily ceased support of politicians from is PAC while they reorganize the PAC’s “giving criteria and how decisions are made in terms of the candidates we support.” Other large pro-LGBT corporations that Zero for Zeros intends to target and get on board include Facebook, AT&T, Amazon, American Airlines, Google, and Intel.
