Creator and star of hit TV series Mrs Brown’s Boys, Brendan O’Carroll, has turned down a lucrative licensing deal for the show in Russia after the country’s TV authorities took issue at the inclusion of Rory, Mrs Brown’s gay son.
“They didn’t want any gay, Russia in particular,” O’Carroll told the Sun.
“It was a nice little deal, it’s a big country so the fee you’d charge for the licensing is audience-related, so it’s a big audience and it would have been a nice fee.
“But no gay, absolutely no gay. So I said ‘no gay, no show’. And that was it.”
Rory Cowan, who played Rory on screen, left the show earlier this year. The actor who will now take on the role of Rory will be introduced in the forthcoming Christmas and New Year specials.
Mrs Brown’s Boys airs on BBC1.
