A neo-Nazi and a former member of the National Front and the BNP has revealed to Channel 4 News that he is gay and of Jewish descent.
Speaking to Paraic O’Brien, Kevin Wilshaw, 58, admitted to acts of racism, including attacking a mosque in Aylesbury and smashing a chair over someone’s head in Leeds.
Even though he had been arrested earlier this year for racist behaviour, he said that he had now renounced the far-right movement.
He put this down in part to the negative treatment he had received from fellow BNP members because of his homosexuality.
“It’s a terribly selfish thing to say but it’s true, I saw people being abused, shouted at, spat at in the street – it’s not until it’s directed at you that you suddenly realise that what you’re doing is wrong,” he said.
He also said that he felt “appallingly guilty” over his avowed hatred of Jews, despite the fact that he had a Jewish mother.
He said that he now intended to fight racism.
“I want to do some damage as well, not to ordinary people but the people who are propagating this kind of rubbish – want to hurt them, show what it’s like for those who are living a lie and be on the receiving end of this type of propaganda,” he said.
