Neil Patrick Harris’s character, Barney, on How I Met Your Mother was funny—like really funny and also really naughty, and so is NPH’s new Heineken commercial. It’s so funny and raunchy that you may be surprised (like us!) that the beer maker went with this advertising approach.
The tongue and cheek ad features our favorite gay leading man, Harris, standing next to a man who is grilling. The pun involves NPH asking if he can “flip another man’s meat.”
Neil Patrick Harris: “Heineken Light makes it OK to flip another man’s meat.”
Grillmaster: “No, no, no. You never flip another man’s meat.”
Neil Patrick Harris: “Award-winning Heineken Light is the best light beer you’ve ever tasted.”
Grillmaster: “That’s true. Can I have one?”
Neil Patrick Harris: “Can I flip your meat?”
Neil Patrick Harris: “Suit yourself.”
So, what do you think? Is this new marketing strategy working?
Heineken executive, Ralph Rijks, responded to the controversy saying: “These were the most fun to shoot, and his improv skills we think came through perfectly on camera.”
