New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill mandating that all state schools teach about the contributions of the LGBT community. The curriculum would cover the “political, economic, and social contributions” made by LGBT people, making it the second state, after California, to enact such legislation.
The curriculum will be updated to include both LGBT and people with disabilities’ contributions starting in the 2020-2021 school year. This will go into effect in middle and high school age groups, with updated text books and materials. LGBT and equality advocacy groups see this as a positive step for the state of New Jersey in presenting a more accurate portrayal of the many contributions LGBT people have made to society.
