A new fashion collection, a collaboration between Otherwild and Herstory, has been receiving a lot of buzz in the LGBT community. Otherwild is a studio and a store in Los Angeles, CA. They have developed fashion pieces alongside Herstory, which is an instagram account that curates older lesbian imagery circa 1800s – 1990s. Based on Herstory’s beautiful photography, Otherwild has developed several pro-lesbian apparel items.
“We want to continue to honor the messages created and voiced by the lesbians and gays of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s by making a collection of wears for the community today,” said Kelly Rakowski, who started Herstory’s Instagram account.
Her first collaboration with Otherwild’s owner Rachel Berks was with a shirt that said “The Future is Female.”
Berks explains: “[The phrase] has lasted through the decades and has reemerged as an empowering statement for all, as female-identified bodies and rights remain under attack.”
The shirt was very popular and sold quickly urging Rakowski and Berks to work together on several other pieces.
Rakowski believes it’s “important not to lose the word ‘lesbian’ from our vocabulary. It’s incredibly powerful to simply wear the phrase, ‘Lesbian Culture’ across your chest.”
10% of all proceeds will be donated to the Lesbian Herstory Archives in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
