Ofcom clears Corrie of negative LGBT+ storyline

More than 200 Coronation Street fans have complained to broadcasting regulator Ofcom over the controversial death of lesbian character Rana Habeeb.

Rana died in the arms of her fiancée Kate Connor after a dramatic roof collapse of the Underworld factory.

Fans claimed that this was another instance of “burying the gays”, and perpetuating the myth that LGBT+ relationships always end unhappily.

However, Ofcom said that it had considered whether the storyline had negatively portrayed gay relationships and ruled that there was no case to answer for.

“In our view, the untimely death of the character was typical of this soap’s dramatic plotlines and would not have exceeded most viewers’ expectations,” the authority said.
