Origins Of Social Media’s Quest To #GiveElsaAGirlfriend

We’ve all seen the Oscar-winning Disney animated film Frozen.  The smash hit grossed more than a billion dollars since 2013, so it was little surprise when Disney announced that it was working on a follow-up movie.  Since that announcement, there has been a lot of suggestion on what the sequel should be about and, in particular what the next love story should be.  One of the most interesting comments came from a teenage girl who simply asked Disney to Give Elsa a Girlfriend!

On April 30, a teenage girl tweeted: “I hope Disney makes Elsa a lesbian princess imagine how iconic that would be…. Dear @Disney, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend.”

She continued: “Growing up, I never saw a princess fall in love with another princess — and neither have girls growing up right now…The entertainment industry has given us girls who have fallen in love with beasts, ogres who fall for humans, and even grown women who love bees. But we’ve never been able to see the purity in a queer relationship.”

The teenager was surprised, but pleased, at the reaction to her tweet.  She explained: “It was surreal. I would have never, ever thought that I was capable of starting a conversation not only so large, but about something that means so much to me…. Giving young girls the chance to understand that a princess can love another princess the same way Cinderella loved her Prince Charming is vital to their development…No one deserves to feel isolated and confused about who they are. All we need is someone to show us that there are other options, other kinds of princesses, and other ways to have the happy ending that you deserve.”

The tweet got a fury of people talking on social media about the role of LGBT characters, or lack thereof, in animated films.  It’s not clear if Elsa will have a love interest in the next film, but fans’ calls to give Elsa a girlfriend is intriguing to say the least and unlikely to disappear.  We agree, it is too good of an idea; I guess you could say we just can’t Let It Go.
