Orthodox Rabbi Joins LGBT Synagogue in NYC

Orthodox Rabbi Mike Moskowitz just accepted a job at Congregation Beit Simchat Torah, a New York City synagogue serving the LGBT community. Typical Orthodox interpretations of Jewish law prohibit same-sex relations, gender fluidity, and cross-dressing. However, Moskowitz says his new job as CBST’s scholar-in-residence for trans and queer Jewish studies is a perfect fit. He goes on to explain, “The religious community has a unique responsibility to provide sanctuary, a literal sanctuary for people who are searching.”
