A victim of clerical sexual abuse has been told by Pope Francis that God loves him.
Juan Carlos Cruz, who was abused by Chilean priest, Fernando Karadima, had a conversation with the pontiff two weeks ago.
Cruz told Spanish newspaper El País that during their meeting the Pope had said: “Juan Carlos, that you are gay does not matter. God made you like this and loves you like this and I don’t care. The Pope loves you like this. You have to be happy with who you are.”
While the Catholic Church still maintains that any homosexual acts are sinful, this still represents a significant change in attitudes to homosexuality, and the Pope’s own attitude to gay people.
In 2013, responding to a journalist’s question about homosexuality, the Pope memorably said, “If a person is gay and seeks out the Lord and is willing, who am I to judge that person?”
