Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has told a group of journalists that Brazil should not become a “gay tourism paradise”.
“If you want to come here and have sex with a woman, go for it,” he said, according to Crusoe magazine, and added: “Brazil can’t be a country of the gay world, of gay tourism. We have families.”
David Miranda, a Rio de Janeiro councillor told the Guardian: “This is not a head of state – this is a national disgrace.”
This is not the first time that the far-right politician has come in for criticism for his homophobic remarks.
In a Playboy interview he said he would rather have a dead son than a gay son.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s second city, plays host to the largest LGBT+ festival in the world.
