Miami Beach Gay Pride is almost upon us! Gay Pride week kicks off in Miami on Monday, April 4 at 6pm when the rainbow flag goes up on Miami Beach City Hall. The main festival takes place April 8-10 featuring some impressive names in entertainment. Elvis Duran will be the grand marshal of events, Iggy Azalea will be the guest of honor, and American Idol’s Jordin Sparks will be headlining Pride on Sunday night!
Last year’s Miami Gay Pride was attended by more than 130,000 people, so it will be very exciting to see how this year’s festivities unfold. This Gay Pride is the first in Miami since the U.S. legalized gay marriage, so there are even more reasons than before to celebrate. There will be two floats featuring LGBT Legacy Couples, people who have been in loving relationships for ten or more years.
“We have a few couples who have been together over 50 years,” says executive director of Miami Gay Pride, Dave Cook. “They are so happy and they were almost crying at the excitement of actually being officially married after years and years.”
George Martin, half of a Legacy couple, says: “The Legacy Couples are always very well-received by the crowd, and it just shows that gay couples can be in a long-lasting, loving relationship. It’s one way to get that across to the outside world.”
Pride Week in Miami is jam-packed with activities such as the Miss Miami Beach Gay Pride pageant on Monday, a Spotlight Mega-Mixer on Tuesday, the Miami Beach Pride ceremony on Wednesday, and the Pride Cabaret Kick-Off on Thursday. The weekend’s activities include non-stop beach parties and the parade, which takes place on April 10th from 12 to 2 pm.
“We have a very strong LGBT community in Florida and this is a free space environment for all, and Pride is inclusive to everyone — from different cultures, backgrounds, ages. Everyone’s here to enjoy themselves,” Cook said.
