June is Pride Month! Also known as LGBT month, people all over the United States have observed lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, (and more) pride and history during the month of June. Pride Month celebrates the freedoms of long-time minority populations who have struggled to overcome discrimination and prejudices because of their sexuality. During the month of June, many individuals, communities, companies, and states show their support through hosting events such as parades and adorning items in rainbow colors. Here is a glimpse at some of the supporters that have shown their “colors” this Pride Month 2018:
17 pro sports teams took part in their celebrations of LGBT pride, including Major League Baseball’s Athletics, Blue Jays, Cubs, Dodgers, Rays, Red Sox, and Reds; Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire, Columbus Crew, San Jose Earthquakes, Portland Timbers, and Philadelphia Union; WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks; NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers; and NHL’s Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals, and Edmonton Oilers! Several teams participated with rainbow bows, marched in their cities’ parades, and held special Pride nights.
American Eagle, in honor of Pride Month this year launched their “It Gets Better” collection and announced that all sales go towards LGBTQ youth support project. In their collection, clothing and accessories includes rainbows and positive messages like “Equality,” “Proud,” and “Free To Be Me.”
Fort Wayne, Indiana VA Hospital replaced its five military flags with one LGBT pride flag for a day. The VA Northern Indiana Healthcare System stated as an explanation that in order to not favor one military branch over another to make room for the Pride flag, it decided to remove them all to make room to honor LGBT veterans.
In spite of recent anti-LGBT events, and in celebration of further strides, groups have continued to support LGBT Pride Month all over the country every day this month so far.
