Saying Goodbye to Broadway Star Carol Channing

Tony Award-winning Broadway star and gay icon, Carol Channing, passed away this last Tuesday, just 16 days shy of her 98th birthday. Channing is known for her entertaining roles in “Hello, Dolly!” and “Gentleman Prefer Blondes.” Her passion for the gay community also resulted in her work with organizations like Aid for AIDS and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. During an interview in 2010 Channing explained, “The gay community is responsible for so much of my success, and I love them. It’s a mutual love affair, really. They make the better audiences too, because they laugh often and loudly. Applause is obligatory, but laughter is a reward, and gay audiences reward me often.”
