Scarlett Johansson bows out of transgender role

The future of Rub and Tug, a movie about Dante “Tex” Gill, a trans man from the 1970-1980’s Pittsburgh crime scene, is unclear at this moment. Scarlett Johansson was set to play the role of Gill; however, she received a great amount of backlash from the LGBTQ community because she is a cisgender woman wanting to play the role of a trans man. Johansson recently put out a statement in Out Magazine regarding her backing out of the role, “While I would have loved the opportunity to bring Dante’s story and transition to life, I understand why many feel he should be portrayed by a transgender person, and I am thankful that this casting debate, albeit controversial, has sparked a larger conversation about diversity and representation in film.” Her decision to back out of the film has created some issues in the financial part of things. Scarlett Johansson is a blockbuster movie-maker, so she brings people into whatever movie she stars in. Without a bankable star, the $30 million movie, before marketing, may not pull in enough money. It’s a difficult situation to be facing now, but if the movie is made with a trans actor, it could be a great step forward for the LGBTQ community.
