Senate Confirms A First: Trump’s LGBT Judicial Nominee

Mary M Rowland, an out lesbian judicial nominee, was confirmed by the Senate to the U.S. District Court of Northern Illinois. Rowland has strong connections with the LGBT and is not shy about expressing her pro-LGBT position and her wife and children. Surprisingly there was no opposition, even though Trump’s political agenda has been known to align with anti-LGBT policies. Additionally, other judiciary nominees have anti-LGBT records and plans.

Rowland has been a member of the Lesbian & Gay Bar Association of Chicago and has worked pro bono for Lambda Legal. Senators Richard Durbin and Tammy Duckworth of Illinois both expressed appreciation for the White House administration’s willingness during the nonpartisan screening when choosing nominees. Durbin Tweeted recently, “Proud to help secure the confirmation of Mary Rowland to serve as a District Judge for the Northern District of Illinois. The first openly LGBTQ judge to serve in the Northern District, she has the qualifications, integrity, & judgment to serve with distinction.”
