Six large law firms in the United States have partnered with the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) to create a unique alliance that gives the fight against LGBTQ+ inequality more of a chance. The six law firms are: Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld; BakerHostetler; Linklaters; Sidley Austin LLP; Steptoe & Johnson LLP; and Winston & Strawn. There is a seventh law firm, Clifford Chance, that will be taking the lead on the global effort, as well.
With the intention of overturning some of the Tump Administration’s actions, such as the ban on services for transgender in the military and the stall on the Equality Act. The partnership will give strength for the HRC to tackle some of the country’s biggest cases that affect LGBT discrimination and rights, however it does not mean that individual cases will be taken. The HRC and partnered law firms acknowledge that they are aware some of their efforts may take years to pay off, but are excited about there being a starting point. The HRC chief, Alphonso David commented: ““I have to believe in our Constitution and I have to believe that when judges take an oath of office that they’re going to uphold the law. We have to fight for our courts and we have to believe in the independence of our judiciary. If we lose belief in our courts, that institution that has been created to protect the marginalized, then we’ve blown a significant hole in our democracy.”
