The upcoming TV series, Star Trek Discovery, will be getting a gay character as Rent actor Anthony Rapp has signed up for the role.
This is actually big news for the long running series, as this will be the first character originally conceived and announced as gay. While Sulu was gay in the latest film, Star Trek Beyond, this was a pretty major change to his character and a big upheaval to his history.
You may recall George Takei, who originally played Sulu, taking issue with this change. He said at the time: “I’m delighted that there’s a gay character. Unfortunately, it’s a twisting of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s creation, into which he put so much thought. I think it’s really unfortunate.”
Lieutenant Stamets, the character Anthony will be playing, will be gay from the beginning and chart quite the piece of history for Star Trek. Stamets will be the ship’s Science Officer and a “astromycologist” (a fungus expert).
Showrunner Bryan Fuller had previously confirmed that there would be a gay character on the new show: “Absolutely we’re having a gay character. We’ve come a long way since [when Voyager was airing]. I feel like actually gay rights have come a lot further in that time than race issues and women’s issues.”
Also confirmed for the show are Michelle Yeoh, who will be playing Captain Georgiou, the Starfleet Captain aboard the Starship Shenzhou and Doug Jones , Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer and a brand new type of alien for the franchise.
