Doctor Foster star is to play the “first modern lesbian” in a new BBC1 and HBO co-production.
Gentleman Jack will see Jones taking on the role of Anne Lister, a real-life 19th century Yorkshire woman and land owner, who embarks on an affair with heiress Ann Walker, and subsequently married with an exchange of rings and vows.
The eight-part drama is written by Sally Wainwright who also penned the Scott & Bailey TV series in which Jones starred.
Speaking of Gentleman Jack, Jones said: “I remember the feeling of reading [Sally’s] scripts. They were scripts for women – fresh, daring and bizarre in a wonderful, modern, fun, complex, challenging way.”
Gentleman Jack will commence filming next year, and Suranne Jones will return in Doctor Foster in the autumn.
