Sweden is to deport a 22-year-old gay footballer and send him back to his native Liberia.
Andrew Nagbe, who plays for Swedish team Södertälje FK, was arrested at Stockholm Pride at the end of July and sent to a detention centre.
“I want to play football and live as an openly gay man in Sweden,” Nagbe told the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter
Being gay is illegal in Liberia and Nagbe fears for his safety if he is sent home.
“In prison I’ll be beaten and raped every day until I am released and leave the country again,” he told the newspaper. “Everyone I know in Liberia knows I am gay now, so they won’t hold back.”
Metin Rhawi, the chief executive of Södertälje called the immigration department’s decision “heartless”.
If the club cannot secure their player’s release the Nagbe is due to be deported on 23 August.
