Did you know that today was national Give OUT Day, the day set aside each year to remind us of the importance of giving to LGBTQ nonprofit organizations? That’s right, there is still time to open your wallets and support a worthy cause for the community.
As you may remember, the first Give OUT Day was just four years ago, and while a lot has changed in these last few years, some things are just as challenging as they were back in 2013. For one, the current policy leaders in Washington, DC and many state capitals across the U.S. have, on occasion, been overtly hostile towards LGBTQ causes. This has led to discriminatory state laws targeting the community, hostile guidance from the White House, and the rolling back of pro-LGBTQ executive orders from the previous administration.
On the bright side, during this time more than 500 LGBTQ organizations from across the nation have received donations from a myriad of donors, small and large. This has supported all age groups and types of advocacy and social services.
Interestingly enough, according to Horizons Foundation research, not even 5 percent of LGBTQ individuals donate to LGBTQ nonprofits. So we need to change that, and no matter what amount you can give this year, please think of that LGBTQ cause or organization that is especially close to your heart, and GIVE!
