Love it or hate it, Tinder is probably here to stay, at least for a while, and now the dating app has become transgender inclusive with it’s latest update.
Previously to this update, there were only two options for users – male or female. Now there are more than 30 options available after some had complained they had their accounts suspended due to complaints from other users. You can also decide not to disclose your gender at all, if you so wish.
Tinder co-fonder and CEO Sean Rad spoke to Newsbeat, saying: “Our goal is to provide a product that gives our transgender and gender non-conforming users a better experience on Tinder. Gender is a complex topic and Tinder is a very simple platform. We wanted to make sure we provide tools that help the trans community but also keep Tinder simple for everyone, including the trans community.”
He also said to Mashable: “We can help you match with people that acknowledge that you’re transgender and want to meet you versus people who end up harassing you as a result.”
On the topic of harassment, Sean did say that they will be taking a more aggressive approach when it comes to preventing anti-trans bullying on the app. If a user reports another user for their gender, it won’t be the reported user who feels the brunt of Tinder’s wrath.
“At the end of the day, as a trans user, what you would experience is higher quality matches. The users who were harassing probably won’t be there because we would have banned them. We have completely changed the moderation tools and how they handle reporting.”
This inclusivity update has been welcomed by the LGBT community and it’s activists, including Director of GLAAD’s Transgender Media Program Nick Adams. He was right on the money when he said that Tinder is sending a “strong message of acceptance” with this update.
He continued: “It sends a strong message of acceptance when a platform like Tinder clearly tells its users that transgender people are welcome. Trans people who use Tinder are, like all other users, looking to form relationships and find the right match.”
“Tinder’s update allows trans users to be themselves on the platform, and makes it clear that Tinder is committed to inclusion. This update reflects a growing awareness that trans people are part of the fabric of everyday life, which in turn, accelerates acceptance for transgender and gender non-conforming people.”
