Kayden Coleman had been living as a man for nearly 10 years. While he may have been born a woman, all of his friends and family now saw him a man. He had also been receiving testosterone jabs for five years and had grown facial hair.
Although Coleman had stopped taking his hormones temporarily while preparing to undergo a mastectomy, that brief break from the medications was long enough to allow his body to conceive a child with his then-boyfriend, Elijah.
A few months later, when his back was hurting him, he asked Elijah to give him a back massage. Coleman told the Daily Mail: “It felt like there was a pillow under my stomach but there was no pillow.” He jokingly offered to take a pregnancy test, and was completely shocked when it came back positive. “I never thought about getting pregnant. Because of the male hormones, I didn’t think it was a possibility. It was definitely a surprise.”
Once the doctor’s confirmed that he was indeed 21 weeks pregnant, Kayden and Elijah got busy preparing for their new family member, and they got married. They did experience another hurdle, though. Kayden had to explain to Elijah’s family that he was a trans man, and that his growing beer belly was really a pregnant belly. Elijah says: “It must have been difficult hearing that your son’s boyfriend was pregnant, I don’t deny that. But I felt like there were some unkind comments and I didn’t appreciate that.” Fortunately, the couple and their relatives moved past that difficult time and are all enjoying their new daughter, Azaelia.
Coleman is now planning a hysterectomy, but is thrilled to have Azaelia in their family. “Now it feels great. I couldn’t imagine, and don’t want to imagine, life without her. She is amazing.” They are raising her as two fathers and plan to eventually tell her the whole story when she is old enough to understand it.
