International LGBT groups are organizing an event to help gay men escape Chechnya.
Chechnya, the semi-autonomous republic in Russia, is known for not only discriminating against LGBT, but even physically torturing them or worse as was recently reported by human rights groups.
As a result, Rainbow Railroad, All Out, and the Russian LGBT Network are working together to raise funds to support LGBT individuals get out of Chechnya.
The work of these international organizations has resulted in an upcoming fundraising event in Hong Kong, which will feature local entertainment as well as a panel discussion on LGBT refugees. The organizers say you can donate money, or even your air miles, to help get people out of Chechnya.
Bess Hepworth, Founder of Planet Ally and one of organizers of the Hong Kong event, explained:
The situation in Chechnya is absolutely dire and it’s vital our LGBTI community and our allies speak out and act in solidarity and support our brothers and sisters at risk in Chechnya right now… We must ensure that kind of LGBT persecution this doesn’t escalate into blueprints for hate in other regions of the world.
The fundraiser is scheduled for June 2nd and will hopefully have a great turnout, for what sounds like a truly worthy cause.
