Chinese gay social network app Blued has banned new registrations after it has been alleged that some underage users have contracted HIV after hook-ups organised via the app.
Blued – which claims to have 40 million registered users – said that the ban will last for a week while they investigate the claims.
“Blued was founded to provide a more transparent, proactive and healthy online home for the minority. We have met with difficulties and challenges and we will continue improving,” the company said in a statement.
Although membership of Blued is limited to over-18s, the app has no age-verification process, meaning that minors can lie about their age and become members.
Unconfirmed reports that some minors have arranged hook-ups with older men, and have contracted HIV.
It is estimated that over 800,000 people are living with HIV on mainland China.
