The internet is an uproar over the murder of Cecil the lion, and many are calling for Walter Palmer to face punishment.
The two men who assisted Walter in the murder of this beautiful and iconic lion, professional hunter Theo Bronkhorst and farm owner Honest Ndlovu, are being charged with poaching offenses for not having hunting permits. They will be appearing in court in Victoria Falls, and could face up to 15 years in prison if they are found guilty.
Palmer could also face poaching charges, according to police. There is even a petition to the White House, which you can find here, which is calling for Walter Palmer to be extradited to Zimbabwe to face justice. If the petition reaches it’s goal of 100,000 (which seems likely as it has already reached 33,714 at the time of writing), the White House has to respond.
Palmer has expressed regret, but seems to have missed the point entirely, as he speaks on he thought the hunt was “legal” and how he was unaware that “the lion I took was a known, local favorite”.
Palmer: the fact that you killed a famous lion, who was renowned for being gentle and loved the attention he got from humans, only makes it worse. But this would still be disgusting even if it was another, anonymous lion. The issue here is the immoral taking of a life for sport.
This isn’t the first time Palmer has done something like this, either, as he has a felony record for killing a black bear in 2006. He is also pictured with killed leopards, reindeer and several other animals.
There are already several Facebook pages surrounding this issue, and many are calling for people to write to their local representatives, as well as signing the White House petition.
